This book is written in Swedish. An English edition may come in the future. If there is interest, I welcome feedback.
Hávamál – The Song of the High One – stands as one of the most significant texts within Norse mythology, preserved in the Poetic Edda. Attributed to Odin, the wisest of the gods, its verses carry timeless teachings on wisdom, ethics, and human relations.
During the winter of 2025, I immersed myself deeply in Hávamál through the classic Swedish translation by Erik Brate (1857–1924), originally published in 1913. Brate, a distinguished Swedish philologist and runologist, devoted his life to the study of Nordic languages and runic inscriptions, and his work has been foundational in preserving these ancient texts.
My intention with this book has not only been to interpret the verses, but also to reflect on their meaning in a modern context. These interpretations have emerged gradually over time, shaped by different states of mind and life situations, but often also arising spontaneously and intuitively, capturing the immediate feeling of encountering the text.
Because of this, the reflections do not follow a strictly uniform style. They shift in tone and expression depending on context and experience. At times, they even move beyond interpretation and take on the form of independent verses, as a natural consequence of the source material’s depth and influence. This allows the text to remain alive and open, inviting different readings depending on the perspective of the reader.
In my interpretations, I have consistently replaced gendered pronouns with neutral expressions such as “they” or “the one.” This is a conscious choice, allowing the text to speak to all, regardless of gender. It is my way of letting Hávamál resonate in a new era, without losing its timeless essence.
Hávamál reminds us to care for our wisdom, our words, and our relationships. It teaches that even the simplest insight can be of great importance, and that true wealth is not found in material possessions, but in understanding and action.
I invite you to explore these verses, interpretations, and reflections. May they inspire you to find your own path through the weave of life, and to discover new layers within these ancient words.
