Hávamál – The Song of the High One
Hávamál – The Song of the High One is one of the most significant texts in Norse mythology, preserved in the Poetic Edda. Attributed to Odin, the wisest of the gods, these verses carry timeless teachings on wisdom, ethics, and human relationships. During the winter of 2025, I immersed myself in Hávamál through the classic Swedish translation by Erik Brate from 1913. Brate, a distinguished Swedish philologist and runologist, devoted his life to the study of Nordic languages and runic inscriptions. The first printed edition was released on Walpurgis Night, April 30, 2025. Let the night of fire be the beginning of your journey through the wisdom of the High One.
My ambition with these interpretations and reflections is not only to interpret the verses but also to explore their meaning in a modern context. The interpretations have taken shape over time, through different states of mind and life situations, but often also spontaneously and intuitively, capturing the immediate feeling of the reading. This contributes to the fact that the reflections and interpretations do not always follow a single, uniform style, but instead shift in expression depending on context and experience.
At times they even move beyond interpretation and become verses of their own, as a natural result of the source text’s influence. Because of this, the interpretations may be perceived differently depending on the reader’s perspective and context.
In my interpretations, I have consistently replaced “he” and “him” with “they” or “this one”. This is a deliberate choice to allow the text to speak to everyone, regardless of gender. It is my way of letting Hávamál speak in a new age without losing its timeless wisdom.
Hávamál teaches us to care for our wisdom, our words, and our relationships. It reminds us that even the simplest lesson can be decisive, and that true wealth, rather than material possessions, is measured in insight and action.
The book is currently only available in Swedish. However, I am in the process of translating the texts into English and will update the database here on nirucon.se continuously as time allows. At the time of writing, 40 verses are completed, with many still remaining. If you as a visitor feel that the translations hold up, a printed English edition may follow in the future. Feedback is very welcome.
Updates of additional translations will not be announced each time, but a post will be made once the full work is complete.
