Runemagick Q&A #3 – Music That Shaped Runemagick (and me)

This time the question comes from Andrea82, asking which bands and albums have influenced the music of Runemagick.

It is always difficult to make lists like this. What feels important changes over time, and a lot of what shapes you comes from different periods in life. For this video, I chose to focus mostly on the more extreme side of metal, even though I listen to and draw inspiration from other styles as well.

Before getting into the more extreme genres, I listened a lot to bands like Dio, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Manowar, Motörhead, and even earlier acts like Kiss and AC/DC. Those also played an important part in shaping my musical foundation. But in this video, I kept the focus mainly on death metal, doom, black metal and thrash.

At the same time, I have also listened to, and still listen to, dark ambient, death industrial, pagan and medieval folk, classical music, and other forms of sound. These have, in different ways, influenced the atmosphere and depth of what I create, even if they are not part of this particular selection.

The albums mentioned are a personal selection from my own collection. Not an attempt to define anything as “the best”, but records that have stayed with me and that I still return to.

After recording the video and putting the records back, I noticed that I had also picked out Possessed – Seven Churches and Kreator – Pleasure to Kill, but they never made it into the final pile. I have probably missed many more important albums as well, as always with things like this.
